OFA Annual Meeting Registration is Live!
Plans have now been finalized for the 2018 OFA Annual Meeting and we are accepting Sponsor, Exhibitor and Attendee registration. You will soon be receiving a brochure, schedule and registration form in your mailbox. For those of you who wish to go ahead and register now, you may print the registration form here, or register online here.  We have added a new element to the meeting this year in the form of a welcome reception on Tuesday night at the Juniper Rooftop Restaurant in downtown Columbus. Space is limited to the first 75 registrants. Bus transportation will be provided from the Embassy Suites. If you wish to attend this event, it is extremely important that you check the box on the registration to sign up for this part of the meeting. On-site registration WILL NOT be accepted.

Forest Markets Weekly Newsletter
The National Association of State Foresters' Forest Markets Committee releases a Weekly Newsletter full of all things Forestry and Forest Products Industry related. Each week’s newsletter has articles about: Forest Markets, Housing, Working Forests, New Products and Technology, and Renewable Energy. This week’s newsletter contains an interesting scientific article about how trees could possibly protect buildings from certain seismic waves created during an earthquake. E. B. Miller Memorial College Scholarship
Do you know a student going into, or currently studying, in a forestry related college program? If so, they should apply for the E. B. Miller Memorial Scholarship that is awarded each year to deserving student(s) by the Ohio Forestry Association Foundation. This award has been as much as $2000 in the past. Northeast Ohio Forestry Association (NEOFA) Newsletter
Here is the January 2018 edition of the NEOFA newsletter. It contains information about their next meeting topic, which will a Ryan Clester discussing how to identify and control unwanted native and non-native invasive trees and plants. It also has a November meeting report, a calendar of events, and a President’s New Year Message.


Monthly Housing Starts Data & Commentary
Following are two links to the Virginia Tech - U.S. Forest Service housing market commentaries for November 2017.  These files contain in-depth data and comments on the U.S. housing market. Part 1: Main Report. Part 2: Economic Conditions Report. The housing report is a free service of Virginia Tech, Virginia Cooperative Extension, and the U.S. Forest Service.  The reports are intended to help gauge future business activity.

Tax Seminar for Landowners & Farmers
 
Farmers and landowners are encouraged to learn more about income tax changes during a webinar on January 29 from 10 a.m. to noon.

The webinar, which will focus on issues specific to farm tax returns related to agriculture and natural resources for the 2017 filing season, will offer insight into topics such as agriculture income and expenses, said Barry Ward, production business management leader for OSU Extension.

The two-hour program will be presented in a live webinar format by Ward along with Chris Bruynis and David Marrison, OSU Extension. Individuals who operate farms, own property, or are involved with renting farmland should participate, Ward said. “The program is directly relevant to farmers and rural landowners,” he said.

Topics to be discussed during the webinar include:

  • New Tax Legislation
  • Agriculture Income and Expenses
  • Net Operating Losses
  • Buying and Selling Farmland
  • Rental Property
  • Demolition of Structures
